Dense Fog Disrupts Flights from Pune to North India

Dense fog in northern India disrupted travel between Pune and major cities, including Delhi, causing delays in six flights and diverting one on Monday morning. The affected Air India flight (AI-852) from Pune to Delhi was rerouted to Jaipur, delaying its arrival in Delhi by over four hours. Similar disruptions are expected to increase as winter progresses, with poor visibility frequently impacting early morning and late evening travel. Airlines have urged passengers to monitor flight updates and plan their journeys carefully to avoid inconvenience.

The delays aren’t limited to flights; trains are also significantly impacted. Railway officials noted that services to northern and eastern states have started facing delays due to low visibility. Passengers on long-distance trains reported difficulties, including lack of food availability on certain routes. One passenger travelling from Danapur to Pune stated, “Our train was delayed by four hours, and without a pantry, it’s challenging to feed the children during such extended waits.” The winter fog’s ripple effects highlight broader challenges for India’s transportation systems during peak travel months.

Airlines and travel operators have begun advising passengers to opt for midday flights, which are less affected by fog. However, increased demand during the wedding season could lead to a 30%-40% rise in fares for these flights. The travel industry is adapting to these changes, with airlines issuing travel advisories and exploring ways to mitigate passenger inconvenience. Railways, on the other hand, are grappling with delays caused by limited visibility, prompting calls for enhanced contingency measures.

From a sustainability perspective, these disruptions underline the importance of investing in advanced weather-resilient transportation systems. Improved forecasting technology, better visibility solutions for trains, and sustainable practices in airport management can significantly reduce disruptions. As India grows, balancing urban development with resilient infrastructure remains a pressing concern to ensure uninterrupted travel even in adverse weather conditions.
