The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has unveiled plans to construct 10 new double-decker flyovers.
This ambitious project aims to streamline traffic flow and enhance connectivity across key urban corridors. Building upon the success of the existing double-decker flyovers on Karve Road and Ganeshkhind Road, the PMC, in collaboration with the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), intends to replicate this model at other critical junctions. The integrated flyovers will feature metro lines on the upper deck and vehicular traffic on the lower deck, optimising vertical space and reducing surface-level congestion.
The double-decker flyover at Nal Stop on Karve Road, a joint initiative between PMC and Maha-Metro, has already become operational and received positive feedback from commuters. A similar structure on Ganeshkhind Road, connecting Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar as part of the metro network, is nearing completion.
Proposed locations for the new flyovers include:
-
Mundhwa – Mahatma Phule Chowk
-
Solapur Road – Kalubai Chowk
-
Dandekar Pul Chowk
-
Awhalwadi Chowk, Wagholi
-
Warje – Ambedkar Chowk
-
Bhusari Colony – Kothrud Bus Depot
-
Golibar Maidan Chowk
-
Viman Nagar Chowk
-
Fatimanagar Chowk, Wanowrie
-
Ravidarshan Junction, Manjari
Each flyover will be meticulously designed in consultation with Maha-Metro to ensure seamless integration of metro lines and road traffic lanes. The initiative is expected to significantly improve commute times and support the city’s fast-growing population and vehicle count.
The PMC’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure is further reflected in its allocation of ₹2,000 crore to the road and traffic planning departments in the 2025-26 municipal budget. This funding will facilitate the development of missing link roads, road widening projects, and the construction of flyovers and grade separators, all aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and improving the overall quality of life for residents.
As Pune continues to expand, the implementation of these double-decker flyovers represents a forward-thinking approach to urban mobility, balancing the needs of public transportation and road traffic in a sustainable manner. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other cities grappling with similar traffic challenges.
