Passengers travelling across Bihar and neighbouring states by train are set to face significant disruptions as Indian Railways undertakes large-scale diversions, delays, and cancellations.
The construction of the third railway line between Narkatiaganj and Gorakhpur has necessitated changes to many key services, affecting journeys from Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat, and beyond. Services on the crucial Narkatiaganj-Gorakhpur corridor have been entirely suspended, amplifying commuter woes at a time when mobility is critical for citizens returning home and businesses relying on logistics.Several long-distance trains have been rerouted through alternate tracks to accommodate the ongoing construction activity. For instance, the Darbhanga-Anand Vihar Amrit Bharat Express, operating on 28 April and 1 May, will now pass through Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Chhapra Gramin, Bhatni, and Gorakhpur Cantt., effectively bypassing its original path. Similarly, the Porbandar-Muzaffarpur Express departing on 25 April will detour via Lucknow, Maa Belha Devi Dham, Varanasi, Aundihar, Chhapra, and Muzaffarpur.

The Antyodaya Express from Jalandhar City on 27 April will traverse a modified route through Gorakhpur Cantt, Bhatni, and Darbhanga, indicating the breadth of operational shifts underway.Passengers should prepare for long waiting times as numerous trains are expected to be delayed by four to five hours. Garib Rath Express from Muzaffarpur will be delayed by five hours on 2 May, while Avadh Express services will experience delays ranging from two to five hours across various days. The Saptkranti Superfast Express will see rescheduling from Muzaffarpur by two to three hours. Even trains originating from distant stations, such as the Kamakhya-Udaipur City Express, will face five-hour delays, underscoring the pan-Indian scale of these disruptions.
Adding to the operational complexity, engineering works on bridge number 110 between Kanpur Bridge Left Bank and Kanpur Central, under Northern Railway’s Lucknow Division, have also led to traffic and power blocks. The rerouting of four major services, including the Barauni-Ernakulam Raptisagar Express and Barauni-Gwalior Mail, points to wider impacts across North Indian train networks. Trains such as the Puri-Anand Vihar Neelanchal Express and the Darbhanga-Anand Vihar Terminal Amrit Bharat Express are also being rerouted through alternative tracks in Lucknow and Kanpur to ensure minimal disruption, though inconvenience to passengers remains inevitable.
These infrastructural upgrades form part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to enhance track capacity, safety, and speed, aiming for a more sustainable, resilient, and future-ready transport system. However, for thousands of daily travellers, particularly those from semi-urban and rural pockets who rely heavily on train services for economic and social connectivity, the immediate impact is substantial. Although authorities have issued public advisories and real-time updates, the scale of delays and diversions has left many commuters anxious. Ensuring that passengers are offered timely information and reasonable facilities will be key to mitigating distress as Indian Railways advances towards a greener, more efficient future.
