Railways Shift Muzaffarpur Train to Ease Pune Load

Indian Railways has officially shifted the terminal point for the Muzaffarpur–Pune special train (Train No. 05289/05290) to Hadapsar station.

This adjustment, effective from May 5 for arrivals and May 7 for departures, is expected to reduce the operational burden on Pune Junction — one of the busiest railway hubs in Maharashtra. The decision comes in light of ongoing platform constraints at Pune Junction, which has been struggling to accommodate the increasing number of long-distance trains. Railway authorities stated that this shift is part of a larger strategy to decongest major terminals across the country and enhance overall operational efficiency. Train No. 05289, which previously terminated at Pune Junction, will now end its journey at Hadapsar, arriving at 6:25 am. On the return journey, Train No. 05290 will depart from Hadapsar at 10:00 am instead of originating from Pune Junction. The schedule adjustment will remain in effect until further notice.

“Pune Junction has long been under pressure due to platform limitations and rising passenger volumes. By shifting select services to Hadapsar, we aim to streamline train movements and minimise delays,” a Central Railway official said. Hadapsar, located around 10 kilometres from Pune Junction, is increasingly being developed as an alternative terminal. It already handles select passenger and freight services and is being upgraded to support more long-distance trains in the future. The move is also expected to reduce platform congestion during peak hours and improve punctuality metrics for several services operating via Pune. The special train, which connects Muzaffarpur in Bihar to Pune in Maharashtra, is a vital service for migrant workers and long-distance travellers. Railways have advised passengers to take note of the revised terminal and plan their commutes accordingly, as the change could impact local transport arrangements and last-mile connectivity.

Passengers arriving or departing from Hadapsar are encouraged to use city bus services, autos, and app-based taxis to reach central Pune or surrounding areas. Railways will monitor passenger feedback and traffic patterns at Hadapsar to decide on future expansions and potential upgrades to infrastructure.
