BBAU Embraces Cycling for Clean Mobility

In a vibrant display of collective commitment to health and sustainability, faculty and staff of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) turned their campus into a cycling arena on Sunday, participating in an initiative that merges physical wellness with environmental stewardship.

The event was held under the aegis of the nationwide ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ campaign, an initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports aimed at mainstreaming cycling as a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle choice. The campaign, held within the university grounds, was more than just a recreational ride. It was a statement of intent. The enthusiastic participation of academic and administrative personnel underlined a growing shift in institutional culture — one that values not only academic excellence but also ecological responsibility and personal well-being.According to Prof Rachna Gangwar, official spokesperson for BBAU, the cycling drive was designed to highlight the crucial role of sustainable mobility in curbing urban air pollution and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Participants were also educated on essential cycling skills, safety measures, and the long-term physical and environmental benefits of cycling.
A dedicated segment of the event focused on bicycle maintenance and the importance of using the right cycling gear, equipping participants with practical knowledge to continue riding confidently and safely in the long run.

This kind of knowledge-sharing is especially critical as cities like Lucknow face increasing levels of vehicular congestion and air quality deterioration.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof R K Mittal, reinforced the institution’s support for active mobility. In his closing remarks, he encouraged students and staff to incorporate cycling into their daily commute, not just as a weekend fitness routine but as a regular habit. “This is not merely about health; it is about reclaiming our campuses and cities from pollution and sedentary lifestyles,” he stated. The symbolic value of such campaigns is gaining traction as Indian universities begin to act as testbeds for sustainable urban practices. By fostering a culture of cycling, BBAU is not only contributing to the broader goals of the Fit India Movement but also aligning with the global push for zero-emission transportation and campus sustainability.

In the context of rising non-communicable diseases and climate threats, promoting cycling at institutional levels sends a powerful message. It demonstrates that higher education institutions can lead by example — not just in research and pedagogy, but in how communities live, move, and connect with their environment. As BBAU pedals forward with a cleaner and healthier vision, its cycling campaign offers a model for other campuses across India to adopt — one where fitness, sustainability, and education coexist seamlessly.
