To alleviate congestion at Prayagraj Junction, the North Central Railway (NCR) has unveiled plans to transform Subedarganj railway station into a significant transit hub. The proposal, currently awaiting approval from the Railway Board, aims to introduce two-minute halts at Subedarganj for over 24 prominent trains operating on the Delhi-Howrah corridor.
Among the trains slated for brief stops are the Prayagraj Express, Humsafar, Shivganga, Purushottam, Brahmaputra, Netaji Express, Mahabodhi, and Purva Express. Notably, high-speed services like the Rajdhani Express and Vande Bharat Express are not included in this initiative. The objective is to decongest Prayagraj Junction and provide more accessible travel options for residents of western Prayagraj and its neighbouring areas. To accommodate the increased train traffic, NCR has proposed the construction of two additional platforms at Subedarganj, raising the total from six to eight. This follows the completion of two new platforms last year as part of ongoing efforts to expand and modernise the station. The station’s new building on the Rajrooppur side is nearly complete, featuring enhanced facilities such as reservation and enquiry offices, waiting rooms, and improved circulating areas.
In preparation for the Mahakumbh 2025, the district administration and railway officials are finalising plans for several important projects at railway stations in the city. Notably, Subedarganj railway station is set to have an additional entrance from the Kanpur Road side, providing major relief to passengers coming to this station. Currently, the main entrance is from the Rajrooppur side, which is cumbersome for many passengers. The new entrance is expected to ease access and improve passenger convenience.
Furthermore, a significant infrastructure project is underway to construct a flyover near Subedarganj railway station. This flyover, with an estimated cost of ₹493 crore, aims to facilitate smooth traffic flow and reduce congestion in the area. The project is part of the broader efforts to enhance connectivity and accommodate the increased movement of passengers during the Mahakumbh.
These developments underscore the commitment of the North Central Railway and local authorities to improve rail infrastructure and passenger amenities in Prayagraj. The transformation of Subedarganj railway station into a major transit hub is expected to significantly enhance the travel experience for passengers and contribute to the overall development of the region.
