Over 4000 Illegal Structures Removed Near Chandola Lake

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has undertaken a significant demolition drive around Chandola Lake.

Over the course of two days, more than 4,000 illegal structures, including slums and unauthorized constructions, were removed, clearing approximately 1.5 lakh square metres of government land. This action is part of AMC’s broader initiative to restore Chandola Lake, a 1,200-hectare reservoir located near Dani Limda Road. The lake, which has historical significance dating back to the time of Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March in 1930, has suffered from extensive encroachments and environmental degradation over the years.

The demolition drive aims to address the shrinking catchment area of the lake, which has been compromised by unauthorized settlements contributing to pollution, poor sanitation, and safety concerns. By removing these encroachments, AMC intends to restore the lake’s ecological balance and enhance its utility for irrigation and industrial purposes. To prevent future encroachments, AMC has initiated the construction of a protective boundary wall around the lake. The project, estimated at ₹3 crore, will span 5 kilometers along the lake’s perimeter. This infrastructure is expected to safeguard the lake’s ecosystem and ensure its availability for public and environmental benefits.

While the official demarcation of the lake’s boundaries by the District Collector and Municipal Commissioner is pending, AMC’s proactive measures underscore a commitment to preserving public land and promoting sustainable urban development. The demolition drive has not been without controversy. A group of residents challenged the action in the Gujarat High Court, claiming they were not given prior notice and had been residing in the area for decades. However, the court declined to grant a stay on the demolitions, citing the illegal nature of the encroachments and emphasizing the importance of maintaining public safety and national security.

AMC officials have confirmed that legal notices and warnings were issued in advance of the demolitions, ensuring procedural transparency. The civic body has also emphasized that the operation is part of a larger plan to rejuvenate Chandola Lake and reclaim it for public and environmental benefit. This initiative aligns with Ahmedabad’s vision of creating eco-friendly, sustainable, and equitable urban spaces. By restoring Chandola Lake, AMC aims to enhance the city’s resilience to climate change, improve water management, and provide recreational spaces for residents.

The restoration of Chandola Lake is a significant step towards achieving zero net carbon cities.
