Pune’s busiest corridors, the Maharashtra State Government has given formal approval for the construction of a double-decker flyover spanning from Phoenix Market City Mall to Kharadi Jakat Naka.
The five-kilometre flyover, a critical link in the upcoming Pune-Shirur elevated corridor, aims to significantly ease vehicular congestion along the high-traffic Pune-Ahilyanagar (formerly Nagar Road) route. The decision marks a major leap forward in addressing the eastern city’s mounting traffic challenges—fuelled by rapid urbanisation, expanding residential zones, and increasing vehicular density. The flyover will cater to thousands of daily commuters navigating one of Pune’s most commercially and residentially dense belts, with IT parks, retail hubs, and new townships intensifying transit pressure on the current infrastructure.
Initially omitted from the master plan for the elevated corridor, the section between Phoenix Mall and Kharadi was later reinstated into the project following sustained lobbying by Vadgaon Sheri MLA Bapusaheb Pathare. His persistent efforts—ranging from repeated meetings with Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to advocacy during the Maharashtra Assembly’s budget session—proved pivotal in pushing the proposal across the finish line. The state’s green signal comes through a recently released government resolution, unlocking the next stage of development. Officials estimate that once constructed, the flyover will decongest bottlenecks that have long plagued the Pune-Ahilyanagar stretch, improving commute times and enhancing overall mobility across the eastern corridor.
With work expected to commence shortly, the flyover’s design will take into consideration multi-layered traffic flows, dedicated lanes for through traffic, and improved connectivity to arterial junctions. This approach is part of a broader policy shift towards multi-modal, future-ready infrastructure that reduces dependency on fossil fuels and promotes seamless city movement. Public representatives across party lines have welcomed the move. Former MLA Sunil Tingre acknowledged the decision’s long-term significance, emphasising that the corridor would play a vital role in managing the region’s urban sprawl and supporting its growing economic activities.
Beyond just relieving congestion, the project is being seen as an opportunity to integrate sustainable urban development goals. As Pune continues to evolve into a knowledge and technology-driven city, the infrastructure blueprint must prioritise not just movement, but equity, safety, and environmental impact. Reducing idling traffic and ensuring smooth flow is expected to cut down on emissions in a corridor already burdened by air quality issues due to high traffic volumes. The flyover approval aligns with India’s broader urban mobility vision, wherein infrastructure development dovetails with principles of inclusivity and green growth. For Pune, a city straddling tradition and technology, this infrastructure milestone offers not only physical connectivity but a chance to reimagine transport planning that works for its diverse and dynamic population.
