A proposal for two double-decker flyovers on Pune Metro’s Nal Stop–Warje–Manikbaug corridor has moved closer to implementation after MahaMetro submitted the finalised designs to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The flyovers are planned at the Maharshi Karve statue and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk to address traffic congestion along the proposed elevated metro route.
The PMC has not yet decided whether it or MahaMetro will construct the flyovers. The civic body is examining the designs, and a final decision on the construction responsibility is expected within two to three days, according to a PMC project official. The approval is required before work on the metro corridor can begin.
The 6.12-kilometre Nal Stop–Warje–Manikbaug metro corridor received approval from the Union Cabinet in November 2025. The elevated route will have six stations: Karve statue, Dahanukar Colony, Karvenagar, Warje, Daultnagar and Manikbaug. MahaMetro had invited tenders for construction of the corridor and its stations in June, with the tender deadline later extended to October.
The two flyovers are being incorporated into the metro infrastructure. The road flyover will occupy the first level, while the metro route will run above it on the second level. The proposed work at the two locations, including the associated metro construction, is estimated to cost around Rs 404 crore at 2021 construction rates. The cost could increase by up to 10 per cent based on current rates.
The Maharshi Karve statue flyover is planned to be 1.6 kilometres long, extending from the Hanuman temple on Karve Road to the vicinity of Hotel Mirch Masala in Dahanukar Colony. It is estimated to cost Rs 327 crore. The Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk flyover is planned to be 500 metres long, running from the D-Mart junction towards the canal road, at an estimated cost of Rs 77 crore.
MahaMetro’s director of operations, Atul Gadgil, said the designs had been finalised and submitted to the municipal corporation. He said construction would begin as soon as the PMC grants approval. PMC chief engineer for projects Dinkar Gojare said the civic body had received the designs and was studying them. He added that the corporation had proposed constructing both flyovers and had sent a letter on the matter to MahaMetro.
If approval is secured within the required timeframe, work on the Nal Stop–Warje–Manikbaug corridor could begin by the end of 2026, according to information attributed to MahaMetro sources. The immediate next step is the PMC’s decision on the flyover designs and construction responsibility.
