Thane child care homes and observation homes will undergo a detailed inspection this week by officials from the Women and Child Development Department in Sangli, according to Thane district women and child development officer Namita Shinde. The review will examine facilities, child safety, administration and the overall functioning of the institutions.
The inspection will cover 28 child-care homes and observation homes in Thane district. Officials from another district will visit the institutions instead of relying only on local administrative checks, with the stated aim of improving objectivity and transparency in the review process.
Inspectors will assess whether the facilities available at each institution are adequate for the children’s needs. The review is expected to cover accommodation, cleanliness, drinking water, food, healthcare, education, recreation and play areas, as well as other basic services required in residential child-care settings.
The inspection will also examine safety arrangements for children living in the homes. Officials will review the day-to-day functioning of the institutions, child-care practices, staff arrangements, required registers and administrative procedures. Compliance with government standards, rules and relevant guidelines will also be assessed.
The review will include child-care homes, observation homes and adoption institutions in the district, according to the report. Each institution will be assessed separately, and any shortcoming, irregularity or absence of essential facilities will be recorded in the inspection report.
The decision comes amid the administrative responsibility to ensure that children placed in institutional care receive a safe, clean and suitable environment. Children may enter these facilities for different reasons, making the availability of basic services and protection measures a central part of the inspection process.
The cross-district arrangement is intended to provide an independent assessment of conditions. Rather than limiting the exercise to documentary records, the officials will conduct physical visits and verify the situation on the ground. The inspection will therefore compare institutional records and stated arrangements with the facilities and systems available at each location.
If deficiencies or violations of prescribed norms are identified, they will be documented and brought to the attention of the administration. Further action to address the shortcomings will be taken according to instructions issued after the report is reviewed.
“The institutions in the district will be reviewed and a report will be prepared and sent to the commissionerate. Further action will be taken according to the instructions received thereafter,” Shinde said. The Sangli Women and Child Development Department officials are expected to visit the Thane institutions during the current week.
