Kolkata to Build Rs 900 Crore Underground Parking with 3 Smart Gates at Esplanade

A ₹900-crore underground parking facility will soon take shape near Shaheed Minar at Esplanade, one of Central Kolkata’s most congested zones.

The new development, part of a larger multi-modal transport hub, aims to accommodate 900 vehicles and features three smart entry and exit points to ease vehicular pressure in the heart of the city. According to The Times of India, the parking facility will be accessible from Curzon Park, the state bus terminus, and Press Club Kolkata. These access points have been strategically chosen to distribute traffic flow efficiently and prevent bottlenecks near key commercial, administrative and transit landmarks. One of the key enablers of the project is the relocation of the state-run bus terminus currently based in Esplanade. As per a directive issued by the Calcutta High Court in 2011 and upheld by the Supreme Court, the terminus will shift to New Town and Santragachhi. This move will clear the central district for smooth construction and operational ease of the new parking structure.

In parallel, Kolkata Police have proposed a pedestrian underpass at the intersection of Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Rani Rashmoni Avenue to ensure safe foot traffic near Esplanade Metro and the new parking site. This aims to ease pedestrian congestion, particularly in a zone where both road and foot traffic are consistently high. More than just a parking solution, the ₹900-crore initiative is seen as a strategic urban mobility intervention. By integrating parking, pedestrian, and transit planning, the project promises not only to decongest the city’s core but also to modernise its aging infrastructure with sustainable, commuter-friendly solutions.

The facility is expected to significantly reduce on-road vehicle clutter while preserving the area’s heritage landscape, giving a much-needed breather to one of Kolkata’s busiest urban intersections.
