NHAI Awards Rs 5730 Crore Contract for Guwahati Ring Road

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded a Rs 5730 crore contract for the construction of the Guwahati Ring Road.

This project, aimed at enhancing urban mobility and economic growth in the state’s capital, marks a pivotal step in the region’s development. The Guwahati Ring Road is a 121-kilometer arterial road designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the city and improve connectivity to major towns and cities in the region. The project will be executed under the Build-Operate-Toll (BOT) model, with a concession period of 30 years, including a four-year construction phase. The estimated total cost of the project is approximately Rs 5730 crore, with the Assam state government contributing around Rs 1270 crore through land cost subsidies and GST exemptions.

The project encompasses three major components:

  1. Northern Guwahati Bypass: A 56-kilometer, four-lane access-controlled bypass connecting Baihata Chariali to Sonapur.

  2. Widening of Existing Bypass: Expansion of the existing 8-kilometer bypass on National Highway 27 from four to six lanes.

  3. Improvement of Existing Bypass: Enhancement of the remaining 58 kilometers of the existing bypass on National Highway 27.

  4. A notable feature of the project is the construction of a 3-kilometer bridge over the Brahmaputra River, which will significantly improve connectivity across the region.

The Guwahati Ring Road is strategically located along the East-West Corridor, a vital national highway connecting the western and eastern parts of India. The new road will facilitate seamless movement of long-distance traffic, bypassing the congested city center and reducing travel time. It will also enhance connectivity to neighboring states and cities, including Siliguri, Silchar, Shillong, Jorhat, Tezpur, Jogigopha, and Barpeta. The project is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. Efforts are being made to minimize ecological impact, particularly concerning the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary, which the road will pass near. The construction of the bridge over the Brahmaputra River is expected to incorporate eco-friendly technologies to preserve the river’s ecosystem.

The Guwahati Ring Road is anticipated to stimulate economic growth in the region by improving logistics and transportation efficiency. Enhanced connectivity is expected to attract investments, boost trade, and create employment opportunities, contributing to the overall development of Assam. The awarding of the Rs 5730 crore contract for the Guwahati Ring Road by NHAI represents a significant milestone in Assam’s infrastructure development. With its strategic design, environmental considerations, and potential economic benefits, the project is poised to transform Guwahati into a more connected and economically vibrant city.
