New Metro Systems Planned for Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is advancing metro rail projects in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.

The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (APMRCL) is overseeing the development of these projects, which aim to provide efficient and sustainable public transportation options in the state’s two major cities. The Visakhapatnam metro project is planned to span approximately 46 kilometers across three corridors, while the Vijayawada metro will cover about 38 kilometers over two corridors. These projects are part of a broader strategy to shift commuters from private vehicles to public transport, thereby reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact.

SYSTRA India, a consultancy firm, has been appointed to update the Comprehensive Mobility Plans (CMPs) for both cities. These updated plans are essential for securing central government approval and funding. The original CMPs were prepared in 2019, and the revisions will reflect current urban development and transportation needs. In Visakhapatnam, the metro corridors are designed to connect key areas, including the Kommadi Junction to the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant gate along NH-16, enhancing connectivity for commuters. Similarly, in Vijayawada, one of the proposed corridors will run from Ramavarappadu Junction to Nidamanuru, also along NH-16, facilitating smoother transit across the city.

The state government has already approved Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the first phase of both metro projects. The Visakhapatnam metro’s initial phase is estimated to cost ₹11,498 crore, while the Vijayawada metro’s first phase is projected at ₹11,009 crore. These DPRs have been submitted to the central government for further approval and funding. Land acquisition is a critical component of these projects. In Visakhapatnam, approximately 99.8 acres are earmarked for the metro, with a mix of privately owned and government-held land. In Vijayawada, around 91 acres across Krishna and NTR districts are identified for the metro’s development.

The metro projects are envisioned to be eco-friendly, incorporating sustainable practices such as energy-efficient systems and green building standards. The aim is to create a zero-net-carbon transportation network that aligns with global environmental goals. These metro initiatives are expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents by providing reliable, safe, and efficient public transportation. They also aim to stimulate economic growth by improving access to different parts of the cities, thereby attracting businesses and investments.

The development of metro systems in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada represents a forward-thinking approach to urban planning in Andhra Pradesh. By investing in sustainable infrastructure, the state is taking concrete steps toward building equitable and eco-friendly cities that can serve as models for other regions. As these projects progress, continued collaboration between state authorities, consultants, and the central government will be crucial to ensure timely completion and operational efficiency. The successful implementation of these metro systems will mark a significant milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s journey toward sustainable urban development.
