UltraTech Cement has launched Ultravolt, its wires and cables business, with an investment of ₹1,800 crore and a stated goal of becoming the segment’s second-largest player within five years. The company said Ultravolt is already the second-largest player in the wires segment by capacity.
The launch marks UltraTech’s entry into a business linked to residential construction, commercial development, industrial projects and infrastructure. Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, described wires and cables as a category positioned at the intersection of urbanisation, electrification and digitisation.
Birla said the group expects more than 100 million new homes over the next decade, expanding energy infrastructure and the growth of data centres to support demand for wires and cables. He also described the creation of new businesses as an increasingly important part of the Aditya Birla Group’s strategy.
Ultravolt plans to reach more than one lakh retailers and use over 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions outlets to expand availability. The company will initially roll out the brand across more than 500 districts and 6,000 pin codes, according to Dilip Gaur, director of Ultravolt.
The company has built a new manufacturing facility at Jhagadia in Gujarat’s Bharuch district. Ultravolt said the facility’s location is intended to support distribution and logistics operations for markets across India. The business will also draw on UltraTech’s network of more than 20 warehouses and its existing relationships with individual home builders, contractors, real-estate developers and engineering, procurement and construction companies.
Sriram Rangarajan, chief executive officer of Ultravolt, said the initial portfolio includes home wires, flexible wires and cables for residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure applications. The company plans to expand into a wider range of electrical accessories over time.
Ultravolt is also developing an electrician engagement programme focused on product knowledge, safety and installation standards. More than 1,600 electricians had joined the programme before the launch, while the company aims to train more than 40,000 electricians over the coming year under the Skill India programme with the Electrical Sector Skills Council of India.
The launch is the fourth new business announced by the Aditya Birla Group after its entries into Birla Opus paints, Indriya gold jewellery retail and Birla Pivot, its business-to-business e-commerce platform. Ultravolt’s next phase will centre on expanding its retail and distribution network, increasing electrician training and scaling production from its Jhagadia facility.
