The University of Colorado Denver has received a letter of intent from the University Grants Commission to establish a degree-granting campus in Hyderabad, with the first cohort expected to begin studies in August 2027. The proposed campus would be the first public American university campus in India and the first foreign university campus in Telangana, according to the announcement reported by the Times of India.
The Hyderabad location is expected to offer programmes in business, computing, engineering and analytics. CU Denver said the campus would focus on academic quality, student outcomes, applied learning, social mobility and workforce relevance. The proposed academic model places career-linked education at the centre of the university’s plans for its India presence.
Kenneth T Christensen, chancellor of CU Denver, said expanding access to high-quality education has been central to the university’s vision. He said the Hyderabad initiative would build on CU Denver’s longstanding connection with students from India and allow the university to combine rigorous academics, career-aligned learning and real-world experience for students in the country.
The campus will be established with Emeritus, CU Denver’s strategic joint venture partner and a global education company. Ashwin Damera, co-founder and chief executive officer of Emeritus, said the proposed campus would bring globally relevant education closer to students in India. He said CU Denver’s emphasis on applied learning, interdisciplinary education and career readiness was relevant to the needs of a changing workforce.
The proposed programme mix places Hyderabad’s education and employment ecosystem at the centre of the initiative. Business, computing, engineering and analytics are fields that connect higher education with technology, services and other skilled-work sectors. However, the supplied announcement does not specify the campus location within Hyderabad, its planned capacity, fee structure, admission criteria, investment size or the number of programmes to be offered at launch.
CU Denver was established in 1973 and is governed by the University of Colorado Board of Regents. It serves approximately 14,000 students and has a global alumni network of more than 100,000 graduates across more than 100 countries. The proposed Hyderabad campus will now move towards its stated target of welcoming students in August 2027, subject to the next stages of establishment and implementation.
