Wipro Kawasaki Precision Machinery plans to invest ₹1,000 crore in a new manufacturing plant at the Phase V Industrial Area in Harohalli, about 50 km from Bengaluru, Karnataka Industries Minister MB Patil said on Thursday. The proposed Wipro Kawasaki plant is expected to create 1,200 jobs and expand the company’s hydraulic pump production.
Patil made the announcement after meeting a high-level delegation from the company, led by its chief executive officer Minoru Hatsuda, at Khanija Bhavan in Bengaluru. The minister said the facility would strengthen the company’s manufacturing operations in the state.
Wipro Kawasaki currently operates a manufacturing unit on leased premises at Kumbalgodu, on Bengaluru’s outskirts. That facility manufactures about 80,000 hydraulic pumps annually, according to the minister’s statement. The proposed plant is expected to increase the company’s annual production capacity to more than two lakh hydraulic pumps.
Japan-based Kawasaki, in partnership with Wipro, has sought 30 acres of land for the new facility in Harohalli’s Phase V Industrial Area. The land requirement places the proposed plant within one of the industrial development areas located beyond Bengaluru’s core urban region.
The announcement did not provide details on the project’s construction cost, the exact composition of the 1,200 jobs, the proposed production schedule or the infrastructure arrangements for the site. It also did not specify the project’s approvals, construction milestones or the planned commissioning date beyond the minister’s statement on expected operations.
Patil said the state would provide the land expeditiously. “We will provide the land expeditiously. The new manufacturing plant is expected to commence operations within a year,” he said.
The proposed expansion would move Wipro Kawasaki’s manufacturing activity from its existing leased premises at Kumbalgodu to a larger facility at Harohalli while retaining the company’s presence in the Bengaluru region. The company’s stated production capacity at the new plant would be more than twice the output currently reported from its Kumbalgodu unit.
The next steps identified in the announcement are the allocation of 30 acres for the facility and the company’s work towards starting operations within a year, subject to the project’s development and required approvals.
