However, the increased footfall, coupled with the inherent dangers posed by the monsoon – slippery slopes, overflowing streams, and the risk of sudden downpours – creates a potentially hazardous situation for unprepared and unaware trekkers.
Forest officials, responsible for areas including Kalsubai Peak, have emphasized the dangers associated with trekking near steep slopes or forts during this season. “Efforts have been made to mitigate these risks, including repair work at Kalsubai, but the responsibility also falls on visitors to navigate these areas safely. By adhering to established guidelines and exercising caution, the enchanting landscapes of Maharashtra can be enjoyed without compromising on safety,” said a forest official.
The Guardian Mountaineering Institute and the All Maharashtra Mountaineering Association, through the Maharashtra Mountaineers’ Rescue Coordination Centre, play a vital role in ensuring the safety of trekkers. Volunteers from these organizations, driven by a commitment to social welfare, often risk their own lives during rescue operations.
In response to these challenges, the Akhil Maharashtra Giryarohan Mahasangha has issued comprehensive guidelines to promote safe trekking practices. These guidelines recommend trekking with recognized groups, carrying first-aid supplies, and maintaining communication with someone outside the group. Additional precautions include using walking sticks, being cautious on slippery paths, and avoiding risky photo opportunities.
Environmental responsibility is also emphasized, urging trekkers to avoid littering and to be mindful of their impact on the natural surroundings. In case of emergencies, a 24×7 helpline is available to provide immediate assistance to those in need.
