In a bid to enhance aesthetics and improve air quality across Bengaluru, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a comprehensive initiative to revamp 20 major junctions with a budget of Rs 20 crore. The project, aimed at transforming these key locations into green spaces, underscores BBMP’s commitment to sustainable urban development and environmental enhancement.
Among the selected locations, which include prominent junctions such as Tagore Circle, Dairy Circle, and Mekhri Circle, five have been identified for their poor air quality, highlighting the strategic focus of the initiative to address environmental concerns through green infrastructure.
The project’s scope encompasses a range of activities aimed at rejuvenating these junctions. This includes the desilting and reconstruction of drains, replacement of drain slabs, demolition of dilapidated footpaths, installation of new footpaths based on reference drawings, construction of ramps, and installation of bollards for enhanced safety. Moreover, the initiative will see the deployment of pole lights for improved visibility, and the planting of a variety of trees, flowering plants, shrubs, and ground covers to create shaded areas and green buffers.
“BBMP’s initiative integrates both geometric corrections and landscaping to optimize pedestrian traffic flow and enhance the overall urban landscape,” noted a senior BBMP official. The geometric corrections will address issues such as missing kerb stones, broken footpaths, and traffic islands, thereby ensuring smoother pedestrian movement and better traffic management.
With an estimated cost breakdown of Rs 18 crore for infrastructure improvements and an additional Rs 2 crore allocated specifically for landscaping, the project aims to significantly increase green coverage at these junctions. Currently, the total area spans 1,41,500 sqm, with existing green coverage at 27,474 sqm, reflecting approximately 20% of the project area.
Furthermore, the initiative aligns with BBMP’s broader strategy to enhance Bengaluru’s urban infrastructure while mitigating environmental impacts. By focusing on junctions with poor air quality indices, BBMP aims to create healthier and more aesthetically pleasing public spaces that benefit residents and commuters alike.
As the project moves forward, BBMP plans to engage in public-private partnerships to ensure effective implementation and maintenance of the green spaces. This holistic approach not only aims to beautify Bengaluru’s urban environment but also to promote sustainable development practices that enhance the quality of life for its residents.
