The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken a significant step forward in enhancing Mumbai’s infrastructure with the launch of a tender to appoint a Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the construction of an expansive elevated road from Link Road at Dahisar (West) to Bhayander (West).
This ambitious project marks the final leg of the Coastal Road initiative, aimed at easing traffic congestion within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and bolstering connectivity to Thane and Palghar districts. Spanning approximately 5 kilometers, the elevated coastal link road will stretch across both BMC and Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) areas, with 1.5 kilometers falling under BMC’s jurisdiction and 3.5 kilometers within MBMC limits. Commencing near Kandarpada Metro Station on Dahisar’s Link Road and terminating near Subhash Chandra Bose Ground in Bhayander West, the road will traverse diverse landscapes including mangroves, creek areas, and salt pan lands.
The project holds strategic importance in alleviating travel challenges faced by commuters between Mira-Bhayander and Mumbai, where overcrowded local trains and road congestion prolong travel times. By integrating with existing infrastructure like the Western Railway line and the Western Express Highway, the elevated road aims to streamline traffic flow and reduce commuting durations. Furthermore, the coastal link road will eventually integrate with the upcoming Versova-Dahisar Link Road, forming a vital loop connecting Nariman Point in southern Mumbai with suburban hubs like Bandra and Andheri. This holistic approach to urban mobility underscores BMC’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and addressing metropolitan transport demands.
The appointed PMC will oversee a comprehensive scope of work over 42 months, encompassing detailed survey reports, civil works supervision, geo-technical assessments, laboratory testing, and compliance with environmental regulations. Despite progress, environmental clearances remain pivotal due to construction impacts on ecologically sensitive areas such as mangroves and salt pans. With a lane configuration of 4+4 lanes and a maximum speed of 80 kmph, the elevated coastal road promises enhanced mobility, efficiency, and sustainability in Mumbai’s evolving urban landscape. As BMC advances towards realizing this transformative infrastructure project, stakeholders anticipate its positive impact on regional development and economic growth.
