Construction of the Kasheli depot, the operations and maintenance centre for Mumbai Metro Line 5, has crossed 23% physical completion, marking a key milestone for the high-capacity transit corridor connecting Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. As civil works continue across the route, progress at the depot is expected to play a critical role in determining the corridor’s operational preparedness and long-term service reliability. Located near Kasheli in Thane district, the facility is being developed as the primary hub for train stabling, inspection, maintenance and system control for the 32-kilometre Metro corridor. Unlike passenger stations, metro depots function as the operational backbone of a transit system, ensuring rolling stock remains safe, reliable and available for daily services.
The Kasheli Metro Depot has been planned to accommodate around 30 trainsets and will include inspection bays, workshop tracks, testing facilities, a depot control centre, administrative buildings, staff accommodation and utility infrastructure. Together, these components are intended to support round-the-clock maintenance and operational management once Metro Line 5 becomes functional. One of the project’s notable engineering features is the adoption of advanced ground improvement techniques to address local soil conditions. Infrastructure specialists have collaborated with technical experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to develop suitable foundation solutions that can ensure structural stability over the depot’s lifecycle. Such engineering interventions are increasingly important for large transport projects constructed on complex geotechnical terrain within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Parallel arrangements are also being made to establish temporary inspection, testing and commissioning facilities that will support phased system integration before commercial operations commence. Transport planners note that these interim facilities help accelerate readiness by allowing rolling stock and signalling systems to undergo testing even as permanent depot infrastructure continues to be completed.
Metro Line 5 is expected to strengthen east-west and north-south connectivity across rapidly urbanising parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. By linking Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar through a modern rapid transit network, the corridor has the potential to reduce dependence on road transport, improve travel reliability and lower transport-related carbon emissions. Urban mobility experts also believe the project could encourage more compact, transit-oriented development around future stations if supported by integrated land-use planning. However, specialists caution that metro infrastructure delivers its full value only when station accessibility, multimodal integration and last-mile connectivity receive equal attention. Efficient pedestrian infrastructure, bus integration and non-motorised transport networks will be essential to maximise ridership and ensure equitable access to the system across diverse communities.
As work on the Kasheli Metro Depot progresses alongside other elements of Metro Line 5, attention will increasingly shift towards systems installation, rolling stock deployment and operational testing. The pace of these activities will shape the corridor’s readiness to deliver reliable, low-emission public transport for one of the fastest-growing urban regions in Maharashtra.
