Alibaug region as Maharashtra’s ports administration examines a Versova-Mandwa water transport service. The proposed route would give residents of the western suburbs a closer boarding point for coastal travel, potentially reducing the need to cross the city before reaching Mandwa and creating another option for regional mobility. The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has been asked to prepare a detailed proposal covering the route, vessels, operating arrangements and passenger requirements. The plan follows the recent refurbishment of the Versova jetty, undertaken at a reported cost of ₹4 crore. Using the facility for scheduled passenger services would put an upgraded waterfront asset to more intensive public use.
For commuters in areas such as Andheri and Bandra, the potential benefit is largely about access. Travel to Mandwa currently involves reaching ferry terminals in southern Mumbai or using private boat services. A Versova-Mandwa water transport connection could shorten the land journey to the waterfront and distribute passenger movement across more than one terminal. Urban transport specialists say the wider value will depend on whether the service is integrated with existing rail, road and ferry networks. A water route cannot be treated as a stand-alone solution if passengers face difficult last-mile connections, irregular schedules or limited interchange facilities. Reliable feeder links, accessible jetties and clear ticketing arrangements would therefore be important to its viability.
The proposal also comes as the state examines ways to increase revenue from maritime infrastructure. The ports administration has set a broader target of generating ₹400 crore annually through additional income sources. That commercial objective may influence how the service is structured, including decisions on fares, vessel ownership and whether operations are undertaken directly or through another operator. Environmental performance will be another consideration. Officials have separately examined modern passenger vessels, including solar-powered technology. For a route operating along Mumbai’s coastal edge, vessel efficiency, emissions, waste management and protection of sensitive marine environments will matter alongside passenger capacity and journey times. A shift from road to water could reduce some road travel, but its overall environmental benefit would depend on occupancy and the energy used by the vessels.
The Versova-Mandwa water transport proposal remains at the planning stage, with no final launch schedule announced. The next phase will determine whether the upgraded jetty can support a dependable public service and whether the route can become part of a broader, connected coastal transport system rather than another isolated mobility project.
