Customs authorities at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport have uncovered an alleged gold smuggling operation involving a tour operator accused of using airline passengers to transport undeclared precious metal into India. The seizure of gold valued at approximately ₹1.13 crore has prompted investigators to expand enquiries into what may be a wider cross-border smuggling network operating along the Abu Dhabi–Ahmedabad route.
The operation was carried out by the Air Intelligence Unit following specific intelligence inputs. Officials intercepted the suspects after an international flight from Abu Dhabi arrived in Ahmedabad and recovered 24-carat gold concealed on passengers in an apparent attempt to evade customs duties and mandatory declaration requirements. According to preliminary findings, investigators believe the accused tour operator allegedly distributed the gold among travellers before departure and instructed them to carry the items through customs without declaring them. Authorities suspect the passengers were being used as carriers to reduce the likelihood of detection, a method that enforcement agencies say has featured in several organised smuggling cases involving international travel. The recovered consignment, comprising gold chains, pendants and beads, was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act. The accused has been arrested, while further investigations are underway to establish the full scope of the operation.
Enforcement agencies are now examining travel records, financial transactions and communication data to determine whether the case is linked to a larger organised syndicate. Investigators are also attempting to identify the overseas suppliers of the gold and the intended recipients within India, while assessing whether similar consignments may have entered the country through the same route in the past. Experts in customs enforcement note that airports remain critical points for detecting illicit trade due to the increasing sophistication of smuggling methods. Organised networks often adapt their techniques by using multiple travellers, concealed consignments and cross-border intermediaries to avoid routine inspections.
