Maharashtra’s Chief Minister has unveiled a visionary plan aimed at propelling the state’s economy towards a USD 3 trillion target by focusing on regional development, advanced technology, and sustainable growth.
The ambitious plan, which includes a significant Rs 3 lakh crore investment, highlights the state’s commitment to both urban and rural development, aiming to create a balanced and inclusive economic landscape. Speaking at the “India Global Forum Next” event in Mumbai, the CM outlined a broad spectrum of initiatives that are designed to position Maharashtra as a global leader in business, innovation, and infrastructure. One of the key highlights of the speech was the government’s determination to foster a prosperous environment for businesses, attracting both national and international investment opportunities. The goal is to create a cohesive global supply chain that extends across the state, ensuring that every region experiences balanced growth over the next five years.
Among the most notable aspects of the CM’s vision is Maharashtra’s leadership in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has become a key driver for economic progress in the state. With major national and international companies already established in the state, Maharashtra is creating an ecosystem that nurtures the growth of innovative industries. Moreover, the government is focused on supporting the establishment of industries rooted in green technologies and smart solutions, aligning with the state’s commitment to sustainable development and a zero-carbon future. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including the financial capital of Mumbai and its adjoining areas, will play a central role in the state’s economic transformation. The MMR alone is projected to contribute significantly to the goal of reaching a USD 3 trillion economy, with an expected capacity to generate a USD 1.5 trillion economy. The region, already home to India’s fintech hub, is set to expand further. A major part of this expansion is the development of a “Third Mumbai” in Navi Mumbai, which will feature an EduCity and an Innovation City. The EduCity will house five universities in the final stages of planning, while the Innovation City will serve as a breeding ground for cutting-edge industries.
The development of critical infrastructure is another cornerstone of the state’s plans. The Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is nearing completion, along with the 21.8 km-long Atal Setu sea bridge connecting Sewri (Mumbai) to Nhava Sheva (Navi Mumbai), will significantly enhance connectivity in the region. These projects are expected to improve accessibility to the Mumbai financial district and support the rapid development of surrounding areas. Alongside the urban infrastructure push, the government is also focused on uplifting rural and underdeveloped regions across Maharashtra. Pune, a major hub for the automobile industry, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, emerging as a centre for electric vehicle manufacturing, are two examples of such regional growth. Furthermore, Gadchiroli is being positioned as India’s new steel hub, while Vidarbha is expanding rapidly in solar energy production. The state is prioritising rural prosperity through the development of the Samruddhi Expressway, which spans 700 km and will benefit farmers and entrepreneurs in 15 districts.
The state government is also committed to solving Maharashtra’s chronic water shortage issues. Approximately Rs 3 lakh crore is being invested to make the state drought-free, including an ambitious canal-based irrigation project in Vidarbha aimed at improving agricultural output and ensuring the long-term sustainability of water resources in the region. Recognising the need for a skilled workforce to meet the demands of growing industries, the Maharashtra government is in the process of establishing Skill Universities across the state. These institutions will cater to the needs of the emerging sectors, ensuring that Maharashtra’s workforce is ready to take on the challenges of a rapidly evolving job market. Additionally, the Goa-Nagpur Shaktipeeth corridor is set to enhance infrastructure and industrial development in Marathwada, further strengthening the state’s overall growth trajectory.
The Maharashtra CM’s vision for the state is a comprehensive one that balances cutting-edge urban infrastructure with rural upliftment and sustainability. The plans reflect a deep commitment to fostering equitable growth across regions, creating new economic opportunities, and building a state that is resilient in the face of future challenges.
