Hyderabad Roads Face Pressure From Rising Private Vehicles
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad’s growing dependence on private vehicles is prompting fresh questions over whether adding more road capacity can keep pace with congestion. Urban transport experts and citizen groups have called for a broader mobility strategy centred on public transport, walking and cycling, while making better use of the city’s existing road network.
The discussion gained momentum at a citizens’ round table held in Hyderabad on August 22, where participants examined how the city could move people more efficiently rather than continually expanding infrastructure for cars. Their recommendations are expected to be submitted to the Telangana government. At the centre of the debate is the effectiveness of grade-separated roads and flyovers as a long-term congestion solution. Transport specialists argued that such projects can improve traffic flow at individual junctions but may also shift bottlenecks further along a corridor. That raises a larger planning question: whether Hyderabad’s limited road space should continue to be allocated primarily to moving private vehicles faster. The concern is significant because private mobility has expanded rapidly. Figures presented at the meeting indicated that Hyderabad has around 65 lakh two-wheelers and 16 lakh cars, with private vehicles making up roughly 90% of vehicles using city roads. The main road network, estimated at about 900 km, is facing rising pressure, with vehicle density reportedly up 40% since 2019.
Travel patterns have also changed considerably. According to figures presented at the discussion, buses accounted for around 42% of trips in 2011 but their share fell to about 25% by 2024. Cars increased from roughly 4% to 16%, while two-wheelers crossed 45%. Metro services accounted for around 3% of trips, while MMTS usage has weakened. The shift matters beyond daily commute times. Greater dependence on private vehicles can increase fuel consumption, road-space requirements, parking demand and transport-related emissions. For a rapidly expanding metropolitan region, continued road expansion can also influence land values and development patterns by encouraging growth around corridors designed primarily for motor traffic. Hyderabad’s own transport planning history points to a wider approach. HMDA’s Comprehensive Transportation Study was designed to assess travel demand, infrastructure and long-term investment needs across the metropolitan region. Its framework included public transport, pedestrian facilities, non-motorised transport, traffic management and integrated land-use planning alongside road improvements.
The latest recommendations therefore focus on improving the reliability and reach of buses and restoring MMTS services closer to earlier capacity. Better station access and stronger connections between buses, MMTS and Metro could help create a network in which commuters do not need private vehicles for every journey. For Hyderabad, the next phase of mobility planning may ultimately depend less on how many roads can be added and more on how efficiently existing urban space can serve people across different modes. That would also make transport investment more closely aligned with a cleaner, safer and more inclusive city.
