Hyderabad: As rising temperatures, rapid urbanisation and shrinking green spaces reshape Hyderabad’s environmental landscape, urban planners and environmental experts are calling for the city to undertake its first comprehensive tree census. They argue that a scientific inventory of urban trees is essential for strengthening climate resilience, improving air quality and guiding sustainable infrastructure planning.
Although Hyderabad has witnessed large-scale plantation drives over the past decade, experts say there is no publicly available database documenting the city’s standing tree population, their species, health or location. Without such information, they believe it becomes difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of greening initiatives or prioritise conservation efforts in areas most vulnerable to rising temperatures. Environmental specialists note that urban trees provide critical ecosystem services by reducing surface temperatures, filtering air pollutants, improving groundwater recharge and mitigating the urban heat island effect. However, these benefits depend not only on the number of trees but also on their distribution across neighbourhoods and the diversity of species planted. Climate researchers point out that Hyderabad has experienced a gradual warming trend over recent years, with expanding built-up areas replacing natural vegetation. While changing weather patterns contribute to seasonal temperature variations, experts believe continued loss of green cover has reduced the city’s natural cooling capacity, making densely developed localities increasingly susceptible to heat stress.
A citywide tree census supported by geo-tagging technology has been proposed as a practical solution. Such an exercise would digitally map every standing tree, record its species, age and health condition, and help authorities identify areas requiring conservation, maintenance or additional plantation. Urban planners say advances in geographic information systems (GIS) and mobile mapping tools make such surveys significantly more efficient than traditional manual methods. Experts also recommend greater participation from resident welfare associations, educational institutions, environmental organisations and community volunteers in maintaining an updated tree database. They argue that collaborative monitoring can improve transparency while supporting evidence-based urban forestry policies. Beyond documenting existing trees, environmentalists emphasise the importance of planting native species suited to Hyderabad’s semi-arid climate. Indigenous varieties such as neem, banyan, peepal and arjun are considered more effective in providing canopy cover, supporting biodiversity and improving air quality than many ornamental exotic species commonly used in urban landscaping.
Researchers further stress that compensatory plantation programmes should focus on long-term survival rather than the number of saplings planted. Independent monitoring, maintenance budgets and publicly accessible progress reports are viewed as essential for ensuring that replacement plantations deliver meaningful ecological benefits over time. As Hyderabad continues to expand through new roads, commercial districts and residential developments, experts believe integrating urban forestry into city planning will become increasingly important. A scientific tree inventory, combined with transparent monitoring and native species conservation, could provide policymakers with the data needed to balance infrastructure growth with environmental sustainability and long-term climate resilience.
