Hyderabad Adds New Landmark for Technology Education
Hyderabad is set to host India’s first phydigital museum dedicated to the country’s information technology journey, with a mobile facility planned at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad. Scheduled to open by the end of 2026, the project will trace roughly seven decades of technological change through physical artefacts, interactive exhibits and immersive experiences.
The Information Age Museum’s first facility, called IAM Ignite, is planned across about 2,200 square feet and will be housed in three transportable containers. The project has an estimated investment of ₹4 crore and is expected to accommodate around 25 visitors at a time. Its location in Hyderabad places the museum within one of India’s strongest technology ecosystems. The city’s concentration of technology companies, research institutions, start-ups and educational organisations provides a natural setting for a project focused on the evolution of computing and digital industries. The museum is designed to move beyond conventional displays. Visitors will encounter technologies that shaped earlier stages of India’s digital development, including punch cards, floppy disks and fax machines. An immersive section will use sights and sounds associated with earlier computing and telecommunications to demonstrate how quickly everyday technology has changed.
The educational objective is particularly relevant for younger audiences who have grown up with smartphones, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Understanding the physical systems and incremental innovations that preceded today’s digital economy can provide context for how India developed its technology capabilities. The initiative is being developed by the Forum of Erstwhile TCS Leaders and IT Advisors, a group comprising former technology-industry professionals. The broader plan envisages three formats. Mobile IAM Ignite facilities would serve as smaller, relocatable museums, while larger Discovery Centres are proposed for major metropolitan cities. A central museum of more than 50,000 square feet is planned as the largest format. The proposed expansion could create a distributed technology-education network rather than a single institution. Each location is expected to include common national content alongside material reflecting its local technology ecosystem. This could allow students in different cities to connect national milestones with the industries and institutions around them.
The larger centres are expected to require substantial investment, with estimates of at least ₹250 crore excluding land. That scale makes partnerships with companies and institutions important to the project’s expansion, while also raising questions about long-term financial sustainability and accessibility. For Hyderabad, the immediate significance lies in combining education, technology history and public engagement. As artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure reshape workplaces, a physical space that explains the origins of these technologies could help bridge the gap between rapid innovation and public understanding. The museum’s success will ultimately depend not on the novelty of its format, but on whether it can make India’s technology history accessible, relevant and useful to the next generation of students and innovators.
