Amazon Now Crosses $1 Billion as India Delivery Network Expands

Amazon Now has crossed a $1 billion annualised gross sales run rate in India, while Amazon is expanding its fulfilment and delivery infrastructure across 118 cities ahead of the festive season, the company said on September 15.

Samir Kumar, Country Manager, Amazon India, said Amazon was increasing investments across e-commerce, logistics, quick commerce and artificial intelligence. The expansion is part of Amazon’s broader $48 billion investment commitment in India, of which $21 billion has been committed to cloud and artificial intelligence data centres, according to the company.

For the festive season, Amazon is opening 20 fulfilment centres, six sort centres and 150 delivery stations. The facilities will add capacity to the company’s physical logistics network as online shopping demand rises across metropolitan and smaller Indian cities.

Amazon said Amazon Now’s annualised gross sales crossed $1 billion over the past three months. Orders on the platform have doubled every quarter since its launch, making it the fastest-growing e-commerce business unit in Amazon India’s history, the company said.

The quick-commerce service is now available in more than 60 cities, four times the number covered less than 10 weeks ago. Amazon said it is on track to reach 100 cities by Diwali. Its network currently includes more than 750 micro-fulfilment and urban fulfilment centres.

Amazon is positioning Now as an extension of its wider e-commerce operation rather than as a standalone quick-commerce service. The company plans to offer tens of thousands of products within minutes or a few hours, more than one million products through same-day delivery and over four million products the next day.

“Our differentiation will come in terms of selection… we want to make sure that we offer the largest assortment of products for minutes delivery,” Kumar said. The company’s expansion adds another large logistics network to India’s increasingly competitive quick-commerce market, where delivery speed depends on the availability of strategically located urban and micro-fulfilment facilities.

Amazon is also expanding its value-commerce business through Amazon Bazaar, with a focus on bringing more consumers and sellers from smaller cities onto its platform. Kumar said value-conscious customers were spread across both metro and non-metro markets.

The company said it added 3,00,000 sellers to its marketplace this year, taking its total seller base to two million. More than 2,00,000 sellers in India have adopted Amazon’s generative artificial intelligence tools, while the company expects shopping to become more personalised through AI-powered assistants and agents.

Amazon’s next stated milestones are the expansion of Amazon Now to 100 cities by Diwali and the rollout of the additional fulfilment, sort and delivery facilities planned for the festive season.
