Navi Mumbai International Airport received its first direct cargo flight from Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday, with Silk Way West Airlines’ Boeing 777F carrying around 90 metric tonnes of imported cargo, according to a report by Loksatta and information attributed to NMIAL.
The arrival establishes a direct air-cargo connection between Navi Mumbai and Baku, adding Azerbaijan to the airport’s growing list of international cargo links. The aircraft was welcomed with a ceremonial water-cannon salute by the airport administration.
Silk Way West Airlines’ Boeing 777F is among the world’s large twin-engine freighter aircraft. The flight’s arrival is significant for Navi Mumbai International Airport because it comes as the airport expands cargo operations alongside passenger services. The airport has previously received direct cargo consignments from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Hong Kong and Frankfurt-Hahn, the report said.
According to NMIAL, the new Baku connection is expected to strengthen air-freight links between India and markets across the Commonwealth of Independent States, Europe and West Asia. The airport operator said the service could provide additional air-cargo options for industries, traders and exporters.
The flight also signals the beginning of commercial use of the airport’s cargo facilities, according to the report. While the arrival itself involved an import consignment, the airport’s stated objective is to expand both import and export connectivity through direct international freight services.
For businesses, direct cargo links can provide an alternative to routing shipments through other airports, although the report does not provide details on the cargo’s commodity mix, service frequency, schedules, cargo-handling volumes or the airlines’ longer-term operating plans. These details will determine the scale of the new connection’s impact on regional logistics.
Navi Mumbai International Airport is being positioned as a major cargo centre for western India. Its location adds another aviation logistics node to the Mumbai metropolitan region, where international trade, manufacturing, distribution and commercial activity already generate demand for freight movement. The Baku service extends that network beyond the airport’s earlier links with West Asia, East Asia and Europe.
The airport administration has said that the arrival of the Silk Way West Airlines freighter will support efforts to develop Navi Mumbai International Airport as an important hub for goods movement in western India. The immediate next step is the continued expansion of international air-cargo services and the use of the airport’s cargo facilities for import and export operations.
