In a significant leap towards sustainable mining logistics, the Adani Group has launched India’s first hydrogen-powered truck, deploying it for coal transport in Chhattisgarh.
The vehicle, capable of carrying 40,000kg over 200km, marks a milestone in the country’s transition to cleaner transportation technologies. The hydrogen-powered truck was unveiled by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in Raipur. It will be used to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III Block to a power plant operated by the Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL). Adani Enterprises, selected as the mine developer and operator through a competitive bidding process, aims to demonstrate the viability of low-emission logistics in heavy industries. The truck is equipped with three hydrogen tanks and smart technology systems to ensure efficient, clean cargo movement. Developed in collaboration with Indian and international energy technology firms and a leading auto manufacturer, the innovation is part of Adani Enterprises’ broader plan to gradually replace diesel-powered vehicles in its fleet.
This initiative is a joint project between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL). While ANR oversees mining operations, ANIL is spearheading the group’s green hydrogen, wind, solar, and battery manufacturing efforts. Hydrogen cells for the truck are sourced internally from ANIL, reflecting a vertically integrated clean energy strategy. Adani’s move aligns with India’s national goals for decarbonisation and positions the group at the forefront of green industrial innovation. “This is not just a technological breakthrough but a step towards responsible and future-ready mining,” said an Adani spokesperson.
By pioneering hydrogen logistics in the mining sector, the conglomerate signals its intent to shape India’s energy transition while ensuring cost-effective and reliable power generation.
