In observance of Buddha Purnima, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a citywide ban on animal slaughter and the sale of meat on May 12.
The directive was issued by the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry on May 9 and will be enforced across all BBMP zones. Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha. Recognised as one of the most sacred days in the Buddhist calendar, the occasion is observed with meditation, non-violence, and acts of compassion. In line with the principle of ahimsa (non-harming), many Indian cities traditionally impose meat bans on this day to uphold the values of peace and respect for life. Bengaluru joins several other Indian cities in honouring this custom by restricting meat-related activities during the religious observance. Restaurants, butcher shops, and meat stalls are expected to comply with the order on Sunday.
In a separate development, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has issued a passenger advisory urging travellers to reach the airport at least three hours prior to their flight’s departure. The advisory, issued on Friday, cites increased security screening protocols as part of a nationwide alert. “In view of the nationwide heightened security alert, enhanced screening measures are in place across all airports. Passengers are advised to arrive at least three hours prior to departure to allow for a smooth check-in, security, and boarding experience,” the airport authorities stated.
The twin announcements reflect both religious observance and heightened national preparedness, with Bengaluru gearing up to manage civic order and ensure public safety during a period of spiritual significance and strategic caution.
