Delhi CM Reviews Emergency Preparedness Amid Rising Tensions

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting with heads of all city departments to assess and strengthen emergency preparedness in light of heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan. She directed full mobilisation of government machinery and seamless coordination among emergency services.

Gupta instructed the Revenue Department to activate all District Disaster Management Authorities, identify shelter locations, and deploy Civil Defence Volunteers (CDVs) for immediate response. Coordination with the armed forces, railways, and airport authorities was also discussed, should the situation escalate. The Health Department has been tasked with preparing all hospitals, ensuring ambulance availability, and maintaining essential medical stocks. Power backup for intensive care units (ICUs) is to be assured, and duty rosters are being updated by cancelling staff leave. To prevent service disruptions, the Power Department has been placed on alert to address potential outages and maintain electricity for critical infrastructure. Simultaneously, the Home Department and Delhi Police have been asked to safeguard key utilities, including water and power networks.

The Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and allied bodies have been told to prepare contractors and equipment for rapid infrastructure response if needed. In terms of transport readiness, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have been instructed to develop evacuation route maps and manage fleet deployment. Delhi Fire Services (DFS) have also been placed on high alert. Gupta stressed the need for cohesive interdepartmental action to ensure public safety, urging all units to maintain round-the-clock vigilance and operational readiness.

As part of preparedness drills, the Civil Defence Directorate on Friday tested an air raid siren atop the PWD headquarters at ITO. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma announced that 40 to 50 air raid sirens are being installed across prominent high-rise buildings in Delhi. With tensions on the rise, the Delhi government is gearing up to respond swiftly to any contingency, reaffirming its commitment to safeguard residents and maintain essential services under all scenarios.
