Delhi CM Orders Swift Landfill Clearance Demands Daily Progress from MCD
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to expedite the removal of legacy garbage from major landfill sites, calling the pace of the current waste disposal operations unacceptable.
Chairing a high-level review meeting with senior MCD officials, the Chief Minister ordered daily progress reports on the city’s ongoing mega cleanliness drive. The meeting focused on Delhi’s long-standing sanitation challenges and explored urgent strategies to transform the national capital into a garbage-free and pollution-free city. CM Gupta reviewed the functioning of waste-to-energy plants at Narela-Bawana, Ghazipur, Okhla, and Tehkhand, and instructed the MCD to accelerate expansion work at Okhla and Tehkhand. All projects, she emphasised, must adhere to strict timelines and maintain full transparency and accountability. Taking strong exception to the continued presence of massive garbage mounds at Bhalswa, Okhla, and Ghazipur, the Chief Minister called for an immediate scale-up of bio-mining operations and a detailed post-clearance plan to repurpose reclaimed areas for public use.
Gupta also criticised the sluggish pace of the Mega Cleanliness Campaign, urging MCD officials to prioritise results over symbolic gestures. She directed that all city drains remain free of waste and instructed enforcement teams to act against unauthorised dumping in public spaces. The Chief Minister also raised concerns over stray cattle on city roads, calling for a dedicated campaign to manage and relocate them, citing growing safety hazards and inconvenience to the public. “Making Delhi clean, beautiful, and well-organised is one of the government’s top priorities,” CM Gupta said, adding that cleanliness must include efficient drainage, maintenance of public toilets, and comprehensive solid waste management — all driven by community involvement.
She concluded by reaffirming her government’s commitment to modernising sanitation infrastructure through better use of technology, trained manpower, and administrative accountability. “Every part of Delhi, regardless of location or income level, deserves access to a hygienic environment,” she said.
