West Bengal Dairy Infrastructure Boosts Farmer Prospects
West Bengal is set to strengthen its dairy processing capacity with the foundation of a large-scale integrated facility expected to become the world’s biggest curd production unit. The West Bengal Dairy Project, located at the Sankrail Food Park in Howrah, is positioned to expand milk processing, improve rural supply chains and create stronger market access for dairy producers, while highlighting the growing role of value-added food infrastructure in eastern India.
The project represents an investment of around ₹700 crore and is planned to process up to 30 lakh litres of milk each day once fully operational. Alongside large-scale curd production, the complex is expected to manufacture packaged milk, paneer, ice cream, clarified butter and other dairy products, broadening processing capacity beyond raw milk collection. Officials associated with the initiative have indicated that phased commissioning will gradually expand production volumes over the coming years.For West Bengal, the West Bengal Dairy Project carries wider significance than industrial expansion alone. Urban planners and agricultural economists note that modern food-processing infrastructure can reduce post-harvest losses, stabilise procurement networks and improve income predictability for livestock-rearing households. Better cold-chain connectivity and organised procurement systems also have the potential to reduce wastage while strengthening food security for rapidly growing urban populations.
Government estimates suggest that more than 1.2 lakh dairy farmers could eventually be linked to the expanded procurement network, including a substantial number of women engaged in milk production through cooperative systems. Industry observers believe that integrating small producers into formal value chains can improve price transparency and reduce dependence on fragmented local markets, provided procurement remains inclusive and accessible across rural districts.The project also reflects a broader shift towards developing agro-processing clusters close to metropolitan consumption centres. As cities expand, investments in food logistics, refrigeration and processing facilities are increasingly viewed as essential urban infrastructure that supports both rural livelihoods and resilient food supplies. However, experts caution that long-term success will depend on efficient transport networks, reliable electricity, sustainable water management and environmentally responsible industrial operations.Beyond production targets, the facility could influence regional economic activity by generating employment in processing, logistics, packaging and ancillary services. Yet urban development specialists argue that future gains should be measured not only through manufacturing capacity but also by improvements in farmer incomes, resource efficiency and reduced food losses across the supply chain.
As construction progresses, policymakers and industry stakeholders will be closely watching whether the project delivers balanced benefits for rural producers, urban consumers and the wider regional economy.
