UP to Become Major Eco and Religious Tourism Hub

Uttar Pradesh is rapidly positioning itself as a dual hub of religious and ecological tourism, with both its spiritual heritage and natural landscapes drawing national and global attention.

While destinations like Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura continue to attract religious pilgrims, the Terai belt—comprising Dudhwa, Pilibhit, and Katarniaghat—is emerging as a top ecotourism destination, according to state sources. Backed by circuits such as the Ramayana, Krishna-Braj, Buddhist, Shaktipeeth, Sufi-Kabir, and Jain trails, the state’s religious tourism infrastructure has witnessed a remarkable expansion. Simultaneously, eco-destinations like Lakhimpur Kheri are being actively developed to attract nature and adventure seekers. “The state government is developing modern tourism infrastructure near Chandan Chowki and Sharda Barrage in Lakhimpur Kheri,” officials said. Planned facilities include eco-lodges, glamping areas, a tent city, and water sports activities—all aimed at enriching the ecotourism experience.

These developments are aligned with showcasing the cultural richness of the indigenous Tharu community. Cultural programmes and exhibitions of traditional crafts are expected to immerse tourists in the Tharu way of life, offering both entertainment and education. The broader aim is to create sustainable livelihoods and promote environmental conservation. “Trained nature guides will assist tourists in understanding the region’s biodiversity, including its rich birdlife and wildlife,” a source added. The Yogi Adityanath-led government has taken significant policy steps to institutionalise ecotourism. The Tourism Policy of Uttar Pradesh prioritises wildlife and eco-circuits, with the ‘One District, One Destination’ scheme ensuring site-specific development across districts. The establishment of the UP Eco-Tourism Development Board has further accelerated these initiatives. According to the National Strategy for Ecotourism 2022, ecotourism encourages low-impact travel to natural areas, aiming to educate visitors, support conservation, and create economic opportunities for local communities.

As Uttar Pradesh expands both religious and nature-based tourism, the state is not only redefining its image but also investing in long-term economic and environmental resilience.
