The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has announced a tender for the development of a 5 MW rooftop solar project.
This initiative aims to install solar panels across various metro stations and depots in Agra, Kanpur, and Lucknow, aligning with the state’s commitment to renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions. The project will be executed under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model, wherein the selected developer will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the solar systems. Additionally, the developer will manage the operation and maintenance of the installations for a period of 25 years.
The estimated cost for the project stands at ₹204.2 million (~$2.41 million). Interested bidders are required to submit an earnest money deposit of ₹4.08 million . The deadline for bid submission is May 30, 2025, with the opening of bids scheduled for May 31. UPMRC’s initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate renewable energy sources into public transportation systems, thereby reducing operational costs and environmental impact. By harnessing solar energy, the metro rail aims to achieve energy efficiency and contribute to the state’s goal of sustainable development.
The project is open to both domestic and international bidders, including single entities, joint ventures, consortiums, or associations. Eligible bidders must have an average annual turnover of ₹81.6 million This tender follows UPMRC’s previous efforts to incorporate solar energy into its operations. In January 2024, the corporation invited bids for a 1 MW rooftop solar project for the Agra Metro under the RESCO model. Similarly, other metro systems across India, such as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, have initiated rooftop solar projects to enhance sustainability in urban transport.
