The National Highways Authority of India has invited bids for three vehicular underpasses on the Trichy-Chennai highway in Tamil Nadu, with an estimated project value of ₹121.6 crore. The intervention is aimed at improving local crossings along a corridor carrying both regional traffic and daily movements, while reducing conflicts between through traffic and communities living beside the highway.
The Trichy-Chennai highway serves as an important connection between central Tamil Nadu and Chennai. Its role extends beyond long-distance travel. Villages, settlements, commercial activity and local road networks depend on crossings to reach schools, workplaces, markets and public services on either side. As highways become wider and traffic speeds increase, surface-level crossings can become more difficult and hazardous. Vehicular underpasses provide a grade-separated alternative, allowing local traffic to pass beneath the main carriageway instead of entering the path of faster-moving vehicles.
The proposed Trichy-Chennai highway underpasses therefore have significance beyond their individual structures. Their effectiveness will depend on how well they connect with existing local roads and whether pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users can move safely around the facilities.Urban planners note that highway projects can unintentionally divide communities when access points are reduced or crossings become harder to use. However, the ₹121.6 crore tender should be viewed as an access-management intervention rather than a standalone mobility solution. The surrounding road network, junction design, lighting, signage, drainage and pedestrian facilities will determine whether communities actually experience safer and more convenient movement. The next stage will be the bidding process and selection of a contractor. Once construction begins, timely delivery and careful integration with existing settlements will matter as much as the structures themselves. For the Trichy-Chennai highway, the larger test will be whether new grade separation improves mobility without deepening the physical divide between communities on either side.
