Ahmedabad Rainfall Exposes Uneven Drainage Capacity

A concentrated spell of rain on Tuesday morning exposed a familiar urban vulnerability in Ahmedabad: relatively limited citywide rainfall can still produce severe localised waterlogging. Eastern neighbourhoods received considerably heavier bursts than much of the west, putting roads and low-lying areas under pressure and highlighting the importance of drainage capacity as the city continues to expand.

The Ahmedabad rainfall event unfolded between roughly 6am and 9am, when the city received an average of 10.36 mm. The distribution, however, was far from uniform. Kathwada recorded 45 mm, while Hanspura received 25.5 mm and Odhav 24 mm. Nikol and Vastral recorded 21.5 mm and 20.5 mm respectively, with Naroda receiving 17 mm. The contrast with western Ahmedabad was marked. Paldi, Usmanpura, Chandkheda, Ranip and Navrangpura recorded around 8–9 mm, while Bodakdev, Science City, Memnagar and Thaltej received only about 5–6 mm. Kalupur registered 11 mm, while Asarwa, Maninagar and Indrapuri each recorded 10.5 mm.

The figures point to an important planning issue: citywide rainfall averages can conceal neighbourhood-level infrastructure stress. A storm that appears moderate in aggregate may still overwhelm drainage in locations where water naturally collects, where outlets have limited capacity or where road construction has altered surface flows. For residents, the consequences extend beyond temporary inconvenience. Waterlogged approaches can slow buses, two-wheelers and emergency movement, affect access to homes and shops, and increase exposure to contaminated standing water. The economic cost is similarly dispersed, with delays affecting workers, deliveries and small businesses even when disruption lasts only a few hours.

The Ahmedabad rainfall pattern also raises questions about how new development interacts with the city’s existing drainage network. Increased paved surfaces reduce the amount of rainwater absorbed into the ground and can accelerate runoff. Urban planners increasingly view measures such as permeable surfaces, rain gardens, restored drainage channels and strategically maintained retention areas as complementary tools to conventional stormwater systems. The episode comes as the India Meteorological Department continues to monitor rainfall activity across Gujarat. Its Ahmedabad centre’s latest warning information indicates a heavy-rain warning for Gujarat Region on Wednesday, while no such warning is listed for the following days. For Ahmedabad, the immediate priority is keeping roads and drainage assets functional through the remaining monsoon. The longer-term task is more structural: ensuring that urban growth does not increase runoff faster than the city’s capacity to safely absorb, store and move stormwater. Tuesday’s uneven rainfall offers another reminder that resilience is ultimately measured at neighbourhood level, not by the citywide average.
