Chennai OMR Metro Links Could Reshape Travel

Chennai is preparing a major redesign of OMR and the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road, with the aim of making public transport, walking and cycling work better alongside Metro services. The proposed 32.4-km upgrade could reshape daily travel across one of the city’s fastest-growing employment corridors, while testing whether infrastructure expansion can keep pace with safer and more sustainable mobility.

The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has invited tenders to prepare a detailed project report for the two corridors. The proposed package covers 25 km of Old Mahabalipuram Road, from Madhya Kailash to Kelambakkam, and 7.4 km of the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road.The timing is significant. OMR is already a major technology and residential corridor, while Metro construction is changing the transport landscape around several locations. The Chennai OMR mobility plan is therefore expected to examine road improvements alongside future Metro stations rather than treating each project as a separate piece of infrastructure.

Under the proposal, station areas could become multimodal interchange points. These would connect Metro trains with buses, intermediate public transport, bicycles and walking routes. For commuters, the quality of the connection between modes may matter as much as the Metro journey itself.Public transport priority is another major element. Consultants will examine dedicated bus lanes, bus-priority sections and properly positioned bus bays. On the Radial Road, options could include time-bound bus-only lanes or physically separated lanes where traffic conditions justify them.The approach could also influence how quickly Chennai can develop a practical bus rapid transit system. The wider right of way available on parts of the Radial Road gives planners an opportunity to test dedicated public transport space without relying solely on road widening.

For pedestrians and cyclists, the proposed changes include continuous footpaths, crossings, refuge islands, traffic-calming measures and cycling infrastructure. Street lighting, safer junctions and accessible facilities are also part of the design brief. The environmental component will be equally important. Planned underground utility corridors could reduce repeated road cutting, while drainage upgrades and recharge infrastructure could improve resilience during intense rainfall. Green medians and shaded walking areas may provide some relief from heat along heavily built-up stretches.However, the Chennai OMR mobility plan will ultimately be judged by implementation rather than design. Bus lanes need enforcement, footpaths need to remain obstruction-free, and drainage and public spaces require sustained maintenance. CUMTA expects the DPR to be completed by January 2027, with construction contracts potentially awarded around June. If schedules hold, the road upgrades could progress alongside Metro works, reducing the risk of rebuilding the same corridor multiple times. The larger test will be whether Chennai can turn a high-growth transport corridor into one that is safer, cleaner and genuinely easier to navigate without a private vehicle.
