Hyderabad Plans New Rail Links Around Growth Corridors

HYDERABAD: Telangana is stepping up coordination on railway infrastructure, with the State government reviewing pending projects and planning new rail links around Hyderabad’s expanding growth corridors. The review covered land acquisition, approvals, road infrastructure and station connectivity, while officials were asked to prepare detailed project reports for future railway expansion.

A high-level review at the Telangana Secretariat examined around 21 issues affecting railway projects across the State. These include railway underpasses and overbridges, approach roads, road-widening works and doubling of existing railway lines. Improving public transport access to Charlapalli Railway Station was also discussed. Better station connectivity can help integrate rail travel with the city’s wider public transport network and reduce dependence on private vehicles for some journeys. For large infrastructure projects, coordination between railway authorities and State departments is particularly important. Land, roads, utilities and administrative clearances often involve multiple agencies. Delays in any one area can affect the wider construction schedule. The government has asked officials to examine railway expansion around the Future City, Outer Ring Road and Regional Ring Road areas. These locations are expected to play an increasing role in Hyderabad’s future urban development. Planning rail connectivity before large-scale development is fully established could help integrate transport into emerging districts rather than adding it after populations and traffic have already increased. For urban planners, this approach can also influence where businesses, housing and employment centres develop. Strong public transport connections can support more compact growth and improve access to jobs across different parts of the metropolitan region.

The review also called for a comprehensive Detailed Project Report for expanding the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS). An expanded suburban rail network could provide an important mass-transit option for Hyderabad and surrounding areas. Its effectiveness, however, will depend on station accessibility, service frequency and connections with other modes of public transport. The government also plans to examine the development of railway terminals along the ORR and RRR corridors. Such terminals could become important interchange points as Hyderabad’s urban footprint expands. Officials have been directed to prepare detailed project reports to facilitate funding under the Centre’s PM Gati Shakti programme.

The planning exercise also includes identifying land requirements for future railway connectivity, including potential bullet train corridors. Early land planning could reduce complications later, particularly in areas experiencing rapid development and rising property values. Several State departments, including municipal administration, water supply, revenue, energy and roads and buildings authorities, have been asked to coordinate with South Central Railway. Joint inspections have also been proposed to identify practical solutions to pending issues. For Telangana, the immediate challenge is turning the planning pipeline into projects that can be executed on the ground. As Hyderabad expands towards new growth corridors, timely railway planning could help shape a more connected and efficient urban region.
