Telangana Steps Up El Niño Preparedness as Water Risks Rise

Telangana El Niño preparedness will be reviewed at a high-level meeting on October 23, with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka set to meet ministers and elected representatives at Praja Bhavan in Hyderabad. The discussions will focus on risks to water availability, agriculture, reservoirs, drinking water supply and power in the coming months.

The meeting comes as the state government reviews the possible effects of El Niño conditions on rainfall-deficit regions and essential services. Ministers, government advisers, MPs, MLCs, MLAs and district Congress committee presidents are expected to attend, along with Telangana Congress president and MLC B Mahesh Kumar Goud.

The government has already constituted a cabinet sub-committee headed by Bhatti Vikramarka to assess conditions in areas facing rainfall shortages. The panel will review difficulties reported by farmers and recommend measures aimed at protecting essential services and livelihoods.

According to the report, the state’s reviews are examining reservoir storage, drinking water supply, irrigation requirements, agricultural activity and power availability. The administration is treating these issues as interconnected because changes in rainfall could affect both farm operations and the demand for public water and electricity services.

Revanth Reddy has warned that Telangana could face an extended period of water and power stress if adverse weather conditions continue. He has called for advance planning across departments and urged farmers to reassess crop choices in response to changing water conditions. The chief minister has also appealed to citizens to conserve water and asked public representatives to support the government’s preparedness efforts.

The proposed meeting is also expected to address coordination between the state administration and political representatives. Revanth Reddy has announced that a delegation comprising ministers and representatives of all political parties will meet the Centre to seek financial and other assistance for challenges arising from El Niño conditions.

The government’s immediate focus is therefore on assessing vulnerable districts, identifying pressure points in water and power systems, and preparing measures before the next phase of weather-related stress. The cabinet sub-committee’s assessment and the decisions taken at the October 23 meeting will determine the state’s next steps on drought preparedness, farmer support and essential-service management.
