Hyderabad Expands Animal Care Centres to Boost Stray Dog Control

Hyderabad is set to expand its network of animal care centres as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans two new facilities and the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) moves to revive a non-functional centre in Nizampet. The expansion is intended to increase capacity for stray dog sterilisation and vaccination across the city and its surrounding municipal areas.

The GHMC is planning new animal care centres at Katedan and Shamshabad. The Katedan facility is currently under construction and is expected to conduct 70–80 sterilisation surgeries once it becomes operational, according to a GHMC official cited in the report.

Hyderabad currently has five animal care centres serving stray dog sterilisation and vaccination requirements. These are located at Fathullaguda, Begum Bazar’s Chudibazar area, Amberpet’s Patelnagar, Kukatpally’s KPHB Colony and Jeedimetla’s Mahadevpur area.

The planned additions will increase the number of facilities available to civic bodies for handling sterilisation and vaccination operations. The report does not specify the commissioning dates for the Katedan and Shamshabad centres, or the total number of surgeries the two new GHMC facilities will undertake after becoming operational.

In the CMC area, the municipal corporation plans to restore the existing animal care centre at Nizampet, which is currently defunct. A CMC veterinary-wing official said the centre would be revived within six months. The official also said the existing Mahadevpur Animal Care Centre’s capacity is being doubled from 210 kennels.

Sterilisation and vaccination are carried out by civic bodies as part of efforts to manage the stray dog population and provide animal-care services. The expansion will give GHMC and CMC additional facilities beyond the five centres currently listed as operational in the city’s network.

The immediate implementation milestones are the completion and operationalisation of the Katedan centre, the planned development of the Shamshabad facility and the six-month revival timeline stated for the Nizampet centre. The report does not provide details on the funding arrangements, staffing levels or treatment capacity planned for the new facilities.
