Telangana Rain Alert: IMD Warns of Extreme Downpours in 2 Districts

The India Meteorological Department has issued heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall warnings for several Telangana districts as severe cyclonic storm Murasu approaches the south Andhra Pradesh coast, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely in Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool on Wednesday.

The IMD Hyderabad placed multiple districts on high alert on Monday as the storm’s wider circulation was expected to bring rain and thunderstorms across Telangana, even though its core is forecast to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast. The weather department said rainfall intensity could increase during the subsequent 24-hour period.

Nalgonda, Suryapet and Nagarkurnool are expected to receive heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall at isolated places. The warning for Wednesday identifies Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool as the districts where isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely.

The IMD has also issued a heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall warning for isolated places in Suryapet, Mahabubnagar and Wanaparthy. These areas may also experience lightning and gusty winds moving at 50–60 kmph, adding a wind-related risk to the weather alert.

Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Vikarabad, Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal districts. The spread of the warning covers parts of northern, southern, eastern and central Telangana, including districts connected to Hyderabad’s wider regional mobility and supply networks.

The alert places attention on the capacity of district administrations and urban local bodies to respond to intense, concentrated rainfall. Short-duration heavy downpours can affect road movement and local drainage in built-up areas, while lightning and gusty winds create additional risks for commuters and outdoor activity. The supplied IMD warning, however, does not specify expected rainfall totals, local flooding locations or any announced closures and response measures.

According to the weather department, the warnings remain linked to the approaching cyclonic storm and its expected influence over the region. The next key period is Wednesday, when extremely heavy rainfall is forecast to be possible at isolated places in Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool, alongside heavy-to-very-heavy rain in other districts.
