Murasu Cyclone Triggers Rain Alert in Six Maharashtra Districts

Murasu cyclone has intensified after reaching the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a yellow alert for rain in six Maharashtra districts until Wednesday, December 4, according to a report by Pudhari. Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Washim and Yavatmal are among the districts covered by the warning.

The cyclone formed over the Bay of Bengal and intensified on Monday, December 2, as it moved in a north-westward direction. The weather department said the system was likely to cross the coast near Nellore and Narsapur in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, December 3. Extremely heavy rain was reported along parts of the southern coast as the system strengthened.

The weather system has also affected Maharashtra, where rain was recorded across several parts of the state over the preceding 24 hours. The alert covers districts spread across western, southern and eastern Maharashtra, indicating that the effects of the cyclone-linked system are not limited to one regional weather zone.

Pune district recorded heavy rain in parts of the district, including Pune city and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Indapur received the highest rainfall in the state during the 24-hour period covered by the report, recording 131 mm. Baramati recorded 77.2 mm, while Shivajinagar received 41 mm and Pimpri-Chinchwad recorded 19 mm.

The rainfall figures underline the uneven distribution of rain within the Pune region. While Indapur recorded more than 100 mm in a day, the measurements in Shivajinagar and Pimpri-Chinchwad were lower but still significant for urban drainage, traffic movement and routine civic operations. The report did not provide details of flooding, traffic disruption, school closures or damage in these areas.

The yellow alert remains the immediate weather warning for the six districts identified by the department. District administrations and civic agencies in the affected areas will be required to track rainfall conditions as the cyclone moves inland and its influence changes. Further action will depend on subsequent weather updates and local conditions.
