Tata Motors Secures Order for 148 Starbus EV Buses from Bengaluru MTC

Tata Motors has received a significant new order for 148 electric buses from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), further enhancing the city’s efforts to adopt sustainable transportation. This follows a previous order of 921 Tata Starbus EVs, with the majority already delivered and operating with an impressive 95% uptime across the city.

The order will be managed by TML Smart City Mobility, Tata Motors’ subsidiary. The 12-metre low-floor Tata Starbus EV electric buses will be supplied, operated, and maintained for a period of 12 years. These buses are equipped with advanced battery systems and built on next-gen architecture, ensuring that they are both safe and comfortable for passengers while contributing to a zero-emission environment. Ramachandran R., IAS, MD of BMTC, commented on the announcement, stating, “We are happy to further strengthen our partnership with Tata Motors with these additional 148 electric buses for our fleet modernisation. The performance of the existing Tata electric buses has been exceptional, aligning perfectly with our commitment to sustainable and efficient public transportation. This expanded fleet will significantly enhance our capacity to provide eco-friendly, comfortable, and reliable services to the citizens of Bengaluru.”

Asim Kumar Mukhopadhyay, CEO and MD of TML Smart City Mobility Solutions, expressed gratitude for the continued trust placed in Tata Motors, adding, “We are honoured by BMTC’s continued trust in our e-mobility solutions. This additional order of 148 buses is a testament to the proven success of our Starbus EVs and the operational excellence delivered in Bengaluru’s urban environment.” This new fleet of Starbus EVs will further help BMTC provide eco-friendly and reliable services to the city’s growing population, complementing the company’s long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions and improving urban air quality. Tata Motors’ commitment to sustainability is evident, as the company’s existing fleet in Bengaluru has already covered over 2.5 crore kilometers, reducing around 14,000 tons of CO2 emissions. Tata Motors continues to drive innovation in India’s public transport system, with its electric buses making a considerable impact on urban mobility. The additional order in Bengaluru adds to Tata Motors’ successful collaborations with various transport corporations across India, such as the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), where Tata secured over 3,500 bus chassis orders in 2023 and 2024. These efforts are significantly enhancing both urban and rural mobility in India. With the ongoing success of the Tata Starbus EVs, the company remains at the forefront of sustainable and smart mobility solutions, working towards a greener future for India’s urban transport systems.
