Solapur Water Conservation Projects Get Deadline Extension Amid Drought

Water conservation projects in Solapur can now receive administrative approval until November 30, after the government extended the earlier September 30 deadline for works planned under the 2026-27 District Planning Committee programme. The extension comes amid drought conditions linked in the report to the impact of El Niño and is intended to accelerate measures that improve water availability and strengthen local water sources.

The government has directed authorities to prioritise works that can increase water availability during drought conditions and reinforce existing water sources. The decision is also aimed at speeding up measures to address water shortages in both rural and urban areas of Solapur district.

The extended approval window covers projects proposed through the District Planning Committee for 2026-27. Administrative approval is a key step before such works can proceed under the relevant public funding and implementation process. The revised deadline gives district authorities additional time to approve eligible water conservation and scarcity-relief works.

The government has also authorised district collectors to approve expenditure of up to Rs 25 lakh from legislators’ funds for measures addressing water shortages in rural and urban areas. The funding can be used for temporary piped water-supply schemes, new water connections, and repairs to pipelines and storage tanks.

Other eligible works include digging and desilting wells, constructing new borewells, supplying water through tankers, creating temporary water intake points in riverbeds, and arranging water facilities for cattle camps. The list also includes the provision of safe water in schools, anganwadis, health centres and government institutions through necessary equipment and water-purification systems.

The measures cover both emergency supply and longer-term water-source support. Temporary pipelines, tankers and repairs can address immediate shortages, while well desilting, borewells and source-strengthening works are intended to improve access to water during the drought period.

The extension places responsibility on district-level authorities to identify and approve priority works within the revised schedule. The earlier deadline for administrative approval was September 30. It has now been extended to November 30, with drought-related water availability and water-source strengthening identified as the priority areas.
