The Central Bureau of Investigation submitted its 13th status report in the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case before the Sealdah court on Tuesday, recording further examination of CCTV footage, medical and forensic reports while stating that some aspects of the investigation remain pending.
The status report was submitted by a newly formed CBI investigation team handling the case. According to the agency’s lawyer, investigators had reviewed documents and evidence connected with the case and had also examined issues raised by the victim’s family.
The CBI’s Special Investigation Team visited the crematorium where the victim was cremated as part of its inquiry. The agency’s submissions, as reported in court, did not indicate that the investigation had been concluded. The court was told that work on some aspects was still pending.
The latest filing is significant because the investigation continues to involve questions about the roles of people beyond the main allegations already under examination. Amartya De, the lawyer representing the victim’s parents, told the court that the role of several other persons involved in the case needed to be probed.
The victim’s father said the family was not particularly satisfied with the progress but acknowledged that the current CBI team had been speaking to them and had conducted an investigation. His statement indicates that the family’s engagement with investigators is continuing even as it remains dissatisfied with the direction or pace of the inquiry.
The case has drawn sustained attention because it concerns alleged criminal activity within the premises of RG Kar Hospital, a major public medical institution in Kolkata. The latest court filing therefore keeps the focus not only on the investigation’s evidentiary process but also on institutional accountability, the handling of records and the responsibilities of authorities in responding to concerns raised by the victim’s family.
The CBI’s review of CCTV footage, medical records, forensic reports and other documents forms the documentary basis described in the latest status report. The agency has also recorded the family’s concerns and undertaken a site visit to the crematorium. However, the court was informed that certain parts of the investigation remain incomplete, and the report did not establish that all questions raised by the family had been resolved.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for November 20. The court is expected to consider the investigation’s progress and the issues recorded in the latest status report at that hearing.
