Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure sought a detailed clarification from the municipal administration on road repairs, funding and infrastructure in newly merged villages after civic members raised the death of a 16-year-old girl in an accident on the Katraj-Kondhwa road. However, the administration’s response at the Pune Municipal Corporation’s general body meeting did not address the four specific points raised by the mayor, according to a report by Loksatta.
The general body meeting was held on Thursday at the Hindavi Swarajya auditorium in the Pune civic body’s new building, with Nagpure presiding. At the beginning of the meeting, members from the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) raised the fatal accident on the Katraj-Kondhwa road and questioned the administration over the condition of the route.
PMC city engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar appeared before the meeting to present the administration’s clarification on the questions raised by members. Before the response was delivered, Nagpure directed the administration to provide information on four issues connected with road infrastructure and repairs.
The mayor asked how much funding would be required to provide roads, footpaths and other essential facilities in villages that have been incorporated into the municipal limits. She also sought details of the provision made for these works in the civic body’s current-year budget.
Nagpure further asked whether it would be possible to construct all the required roads at the same time and how much money would be needed to repair roads that already exist. These questions linked the immediate concerns over the Katraj-Kondhwa road with the wider infrastructure requirements of newly included areas of Pune.
According to the report, the administration’s clarification lasted about 45 minutes but did not directly respond to the four points raised by the mayor. The episode created the impression among members that the mayor’s instructions had not been addressed during the meeting.
The meeting did not establish, in the material available, the total funding required for roads and footpaths in the merged villages, the amount allocated in the current budget, or the estimated cost of repairing existing roads.
