Thane Municipal Corporation has seized 99 kilograms of prohibited single-use plastic and collected ₹79,000 in fines after inspecting 75 establishments across parts of the city, according to a report by Loksatta – Thane. The action was carried out jointly by the civic body’s Pollution Control Department and Solid Waste Management Department.
Special teams inspected markets, commercial establishments, hawkers and shops in the Majiwada-Manpada, Mumbra and Naupada-Kopri ward committee areas. Businesses and vendors found storing or selling banned single-use plastic faced fines, while the material was confiscated by the municipal teams.
In the Ghodbunder and Majiwada areas, officials inspected 35 establishments and seized 18 kilograms of plastic. The civic body collected ₹18,000 in fines from the establishments covered in this part of the operation.
The teams also inspected 10 establishments in Mumbra, where 27 kilograms of prohibited plastic was seized and ₹15,000 in fines was collected. In the Naupada-Kopri ward committee area, action was taken against 30 establishments. Officials seized 54 kilograms of plastic there and recovered ₹46,000 in fines.
The municipal operation places enforcement responsibility across two civic functions: pollution control and solid waste management. The inspection of both formal businesses and informal sellers indicates that the crackdown covered multiple points in the city’s retail and street-vending network, rather than being limited to one market or commercial area.
The corporation’s Pollution Control Department said enforcement against single-use plastic would continue. The latest action is part of the municipal body’s ongoing campaign against the sale and use of prohibited plastic items in Thane.
