Residents in Thane’s Ghodbunder area are continuing to depend on tanker water despite the presence of municipal storage tanks and pumping infrastructure, prompting corporators to question the Thane Municipal Corporation’s water-supply planning at a general body meeting held on Friday.
The issue resurfaced ahead of the Ganesh festival after residents in several parts of Ghodbunder reported irregular supply, low pressure and inadequate quantities of water. According to the concerns raised at the meeting, some municipal tanks do not contain water, while pumps at certain facilities are not operational. Several works connected with the system have also remained pending for years, the report said.
Corporators questioned how new construction permissions were being granted when the existing population was not receiving a reliable water supply. The discussion linked the immediate shortage to a wider planning concern: whether local water infrastructure is keeping pace with the area’s development and rising demand.
Corporator Anita Thakur said residents in multiple parts of Ghodbunder were being forced to rely on tanker water. She said the low-pressure and inadequate supply was causing significant difficulty in daily life and argued that the issue was not limited to routine water distribution but directly affected residents’ day-to-day needs.
Corporator Kamal Chaudhary raised the condition of the municipal storage tanks and pumping system. She questioned the usefulness of having a tank when it contains no water and the associated pump is not functioning. The concerns indicate that the area’s challenge involves not only water availability but also the operation and maintenance of infrastructure intended to store and distribute it.
The allegations were made during the general body meeting, and the report did not include a detailed response from the municipal administration on the status of individual tanks, pumps, pending works or the schedule for restoring regular supply. It also did not provide figures for the number of affected households, tanker trips or the volume of water being supplied.
Members warned that an agitation could be launched if the water problem was not resolved immediately. The matter is therefore expected to remain before the civic administration, with residents seeking restoration of regular and adequate supply in the affected parts of Ghodbunder.
