Pune: Maharashtra is moving towards integrating future Metro infrastructure with major highway expansion projects across Pune, with state agencies preparing formal agreements to construct shared transport structures that could reduce future construction costs, minimise urban disruption and improve long-term mobility planning. The initiative reflects a growing shift towards coordinated infrastructure development as the city experiences sustained population growth and increasing transport demand.
The Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) and Pune Metro are expected to formalise collaboration through two memoranda of understanding covering sections of the proposed Kharadi–Shirur and Hadapsar–Yavat corridors. Instead of constructing independent transport assets at different stages, the agencies plan to develop common civil infrastructure capable of supporting both elevated roads and future Metro operations. The proposed Pune Metro expansion strategy includes building double-decker elevated structures on selected stretches where road traffic and mass transit are expected to converge. Along the Kharadi–Shirur corridor, a section between Kharadi and Vitthalwadi has been identified for this integrated design. Likewise, a substantial stretch of the Hadapsar–Yavat route up to the proposed Outer Ring Road junction will also be constructed to accommodate future Metro infrastructure.
Officials indicated that the road development agency will undertake the foundational civil works required for the Metro, including structural elements capable of supporting rail systems. Once these are completed, the Metro authority would only need to install tracks, stations, signalling and operational equipment during future phases, potentially reducing project timelines and avoiding repeated excavation or reconstruction. The broader programme includes three strategic transport corridors linking Pune with expanding industrial, logistics and residential zones. Together, these projects represent one of the region’s largest transport infrastructure investments and are expected to improve connectivity between eastern and northern growth corridors while supporting freight movement and daily commuting. Urban planners have increasingly advocated integrated infrastructure planning as cities face rising mobility demands alongside pressure to reduce carbon emissions. Combining road and rail construction at the planning stage is viewed as a practical approach to optimising land use, lowering lifecycle costs and reducing disruption to surrounding communities once urban development intensifies.
Authorities have stated that construction on all three corridors is expected to commence simultaneously following foundation ceremonies, with completion targeted within four years. Given the scale of the works, district officials are also preparing traffic diversion plans through coordinated surveys involving road safety authorities and law enforcement agencies to minimise inconvenience during construction. The Pune Metro expansion is expected to play a significant role in shaping the city’s long-term transport network, particularly as suburban areas continue to witness rapid residential and commercial development. Infrastructure experts note that synchronising Metro planning with road expansion can strengthen multimodal connectivity while improving travel efficiency and supporting more sustainable urban growth. As Pune continues to evolve into a major economic and technology hub, integrated transport investments will be increasingly important in balancing mobility, environmental resilience and future land-use planning. The success of this model will depend on timely execution, coordinated governance and ensuring that future transit infrastructure remains aligned with the city’s long-term development strategy.
